Headaches affect many people on a regular basis and understanding the cause can be difficult. Whether you have pain at the back your head, the top of your neck, in the temples or even wrapping around the head to the eye, a clinical myotherapist can often help relieve your pain and work to determine the cause.

Factors that may contribute to headaches are:

  • Tension or tightness in the muscles of the upper back, shoulders and neck.

  • Posture is a big contributing factor these days, with the change in time spent with smart devices.

  • Dehydration headaches are common especially for people working in air-conditioned offices or out in the sun for a prolonged period of time.

  • Viral infections such as a common cold or flu can result in a seized up neck without known reason.

  • Diet can play a big role in headaches. Many foods have additives that our body reacts badly too.

  • Migraines (vascular headaches)

  • Cervicogenic headaches, where pain is referred to the head from the joints within the cervical spine (neck).

  • Trauma or injury to the neck or head

  • Hormonal imbalances

  • Stress or emotional trauma

A clinical myotherapist will take into account all of the above and your full medical history when addressing the cause of your headaches. Myotherapy and massage treatment of headaches involves a combination of hands on techniques, including; soft tissue massage, trigger point release, myofascial release techniques, gentle stretching and dry-needling.

Also posture advice and corrective exercises often play a big role in long term change from pain.
